Last week I walked stage 6 of the MacLehose trail with Cindy, starting at Tai Po Road. also called "Monkey Mountain". We exited the Trail at the Shink Mun Reservoir. These are some of the scenes along that tril

The last two photos are of a hike three friends and I did on Saturday. We started at Pak Tam Chung and hiked 17km (10 1/2 miles) to Pak Tam Au via the left side of High Island Reservoir and then finishing stage 2 of the MacLehose Trail.

I’m a few days late on this week’s Monday Fodder. I will try to finish this one today, but will not do one on Monday.  This past Monday was a holiday in Hong Kong… Chung Yeung Festival, the day some people visit the graves of their ancestors to clean them, or offer sacrifice. For the deacon’s and pastors of Yan Yue, however, it was the annual retreat day. That’s how we spent most of the day.

In the evening, we had a farewell of one of our young people, Julia, who left for the States this morning to be resettled with her mom. She and her mom have been in Hong Kong for about four years as asylum seekers/refugees.

Thus, we’ve lost 4 people from RiverGrace in the last two weeks. When refugees are resettled, we are grateful for them, but it’s bittersweet as we know they will not longer be with our RG family.

Last week was a good week for me in terms of hiking. I was also able to go out for a couple hikes totaling around 32km for the week. (nearly 20 miles). I’m doing steps and hills again, and feeling stronger each time. My goal was to do the MacLehose stages 1 and 2 by November 18th, the day the Trailwalker event is. That would be a total of nearly 25km or about 16 miles. The routes I’ve chosen to hike are still not the most difficult ones, and I have one more fairly steep hill to conquer on stage 1. I hope to do that on Saturday.

Fortunately, it’s started to cool down a bit, but just a bit.  It’s still in the low to mid 80’s Fahrenheit (27-29C) most days.

Cindy will be going to the Philippines next week for a conferences on helping trauma victims. As we work with asylum seekers / refugees, it may be helpful, as they have often experienced it in their lives prior to coming to Hong Kong. Please pray for her trip there.

Cindy and I are planning to come back to the States in December. As we have not had a holiday this year, and I don’t plan to count my 12 days in the hospital for heart surgery as holiday, we hope to spend the time with family.

In the meantime, our church, RiverGrace, continues to grow and we are now ministering to about 80 people a week in the various activities that we have. We are also in the planning stages of using more of a cell church model as we have a variety of people and language groups. We have about 16 different countries represented and 7 language groups. We feel we will be much better able to disciple and care for our people using this model. We have a few people/pastors that are experienced and familiar with that model.  Please continue to pray for the transition of RiverGrace.

That’s my report for these two weeks. Blessings, Dave

Memo From God (This is not a new one, but it has good reminders! DA)

Effective immediately, please be aware that there are changes YOU need to make in YOUR life. These changes need to be completed in order that I may fulfill My promises to you to grant you peace, joy and happiness in this life.

1. Quit Worrying

Life has dealt you a blow and all you do is sit and worry.  Have you forgotten that I am here to take all your burdens and carry them for you?  Or do you just enjoy fretting over every little thing that comes your way?

2. Put it on the List

Something needs done or taken care of.  Put it on the list.   No, not YOUR list.   Put it on MY to-do-list.   Let ME be the one to take care of the problem.   I can't help you until you turn it over to Me.  And although My to-do-list is long, I am after all... God.  I can take care of anything you put into My hands.  In fact, if the truth were ever really known, I take care of a lot of things for you that you never even realize.

3. Trust Me

Once you've given your burdens to Me, quit trying to take them back.  Trust in Me. Have the faith that I will take care of all your needs, your problems and your trials. Problems with the kids?  Put them on My list.  Problem with finances?  Put it on My list.  Problems with your emotional roller coaster?  For My sake, put it on My list. I want to help you.  All you have to do is ask.

4. Leave It Alone

Don't wake up one morning and say, "Well, I'm feeling much stronger now, I think I can handle it from here."  Why do you think you are feeling stronger now?  It's simple.  You gave Me your burdens and I'm taking care of them.  I also renew your strength and cover you in my peace.  Don't you know that if I give you these problems back, you will be right back where you started?  Leave them with Me and forget about them. Just let Me do my job.

5. Talk to Me

I want you to forget a lot of things.  Forget what was making you crazy.  Forget the worry and the fretting because you know I'm in control.  But there's one thing I pray you never forget.  Please, don't forget to talk to Me - OFTEN!  I love YOU!  I want to hear your voice.  I want you to include Me in on the things going on in your life.  I want to hear you talk about your friends and family. Prayer is simply you having a conversation with Me. I want to be your dearest friend.

6. Have Faith

I see a lot of things from up here that you can't see from where you are. Have faith in Me that I know what I'm doing. Trust Me; you wouldn't want the view from My eyes. I will continue to care for you, watch over you, and meet your needs. You only have to trust Me. Although I have a much bigger task than you, it seems as if you have so much trouble just doing your simple part. How hard can trust be?

7. Share

You were taught to share when you were only two years old. When did you forget? That rule still applies. Share with those who are less fortunate than you. Share your joy with those who need encouragement. Share your laughter with those who haven't heard any in such a long time. Share your tears with those who have forgotten how to cry. Share your faith with those who have none.

8. Be Patient

I managed to fix it so in just one lifetime you could have so many diverse experiences. You grow from a child to an adult, have children, change jobs many times, learn many trades, travel to so many places, meet thousands of people, and experience so much. How can you be so impatient then when it takes Me a little longer than you expect to handle something on My to-do-list? Trust in My timing, for My timing is perfect. Just because I created the entire universe in only six days, everyone thinks I should always rush, rush, rush.

9. Be Kind

Be kind to others, for I love them just as much as I love you. They may not dress like you, or talk like you, or live the same way you do, but I still love you all. Please try to get along, for My sake. I created each of you different in some way. It would be too boring if you were all identical. Please, know I love each of your differences.

10. Love Yourself

As much as I love you, how can you not love yourself?  You were created by me for one reason only -- to be loved, and to love in return.  I am a God of Love.  Love Me.  Love your neighbors.  But also love yourself.  It makes My heart ache when I see you so angry with yourself when things go wrong.  You are very precious to me.  Don't ever forget that!  With all my heart I love you.

Most seniors never get enough exercise. In His wisdom God decreed that seniors become forgetful so they would have to search for their glasses, keys and other things thus doing more walking.

Then God saw there was another need. In His wisdom He made seniors lose coordination so they would drop things requiring them to bend, reach & stretch.

Then God considered the function of bladders and decided seniors would have additional calls of nature requiring more trips to the bathroom, thus providing more exercise.

So if you find as you age that you are getting up and down more, remember it's God's will. It is all in your best interest even though you mutter under your breath.

A nurse on the pediatric ward, before listening to the little ones' chests would plug the stethoscope into their ears and let them listen to their own hearts.  Their eyes  would always light up with awe.  But she never got a response to equal four year old David's.

Gently he tucked the stethoscope in his ears and placed the disk over his heart. "Listen", she said, "What do you suppose that is?"   He drew his eyebrows together in a puzzled line and looked up as if lost in the mystery of the strange tap-tap-tapping deep in his chest.  Then his face broke out in a wondrous grin.  "Is that Jesus knocking?" he asked.

A man walked in to Joe's Barber Shop for his regular haircut.  As he snips away, Joe asks, "What's up?"  The man proceeds to explain he's taking a vacation to Rome.

"Rome?" Joe exclaimed. "Why would you want to go there? It's a crowded, dirty city! You'd be crazy to go to Rome!  So, how ya getting there?”

"We're taking TWA." the man replies.

"TWA!" yells Joe. "They're a terrible airline. Their planes are old, their flight attendants are ugly and they're always late!  So, where you staying in Rome?”

The man says, "We'll be at the downtown International Marriott.”

"That dump?" says Joe. "That's the worst hotel in the city!  The rooms are small, the service is surely and slow and they're overpriced!  So whatcha doing when you get there?”

The man says, "We're going to go see the Vatican and hope to see the Pope.”

"Ha! That's rich!" laughs Joe. "You and a million other people trying to see him.  He'll look the size of an ant.  Boy, good luck on THIS trip.  You're going to need it!”

A month later, the man comes in for his regular haircut.  Joe says, "Well, how did that trip to Rome turn out?  Betcha TWA gave you the worst flight of your life!”

"No, quite the opposite." explained the man.  "Not only were we on time in one of their brand new planes, but it was full and they bumped us up to first class.  The food and wine were wonderful, and I had a beautiful 28-year-old flight attendant who waited on me hand and foot!"

"Hmmm," Joe says, "Well, I bet the hotel was just like I described.”

"No, quite the opposite! They'd just finished a $25 million remodeling. It's the finest hotel in Rome, now.  They were overbooked, so they apologized and gave us the Presidential suite for no extra charge!"

"Well," Joe mumbles, "I KNOW you didn't get to see the Pope!”

"Actually, we were quite lucky. As we toured the Vatican, a Swiss guard tapped me on the shoulder and explained the Pope likes to personally meet some of the visitors, and if I'd be so kind as to step into this private room and wait, the Pope would personally greet me.  Sure enough, after 5 minutes, the Pope walked through the door and shook my hand. I knelt down as he spoke a few words to me.”

Impressed, Joe asks, "Tell me, please! What'd he say?”

"Oh, not much really. Just 'Where'd you get that awful haircut?'"
